Learn how to prune large trees safely with our latest expert guide.
We all know the appreciated importance of proper tree pruning. Apart from enhancing the beauty of trees, pruning improves its health. Through experience and observations, an unpruned tree looks daunting and unattractive.
So where will you begin?
I recommend you weigh the impact of the job to be sure it’s a job you can do neatly. Be sure you can reach the heights of the tree. For example small shade trees around the compound 12 – 25 feet tall, you can tackle alone. For heights above your reach, I recommend you leave it for the pros.
One you are sure that you can handle the task, look for the best pruning saw as required. You can now proceed to pruning. We are going to understand how to do the pruning.
Pruning starts from the top
Whenever pruning your favorite tree, always remember to begin working from the top. This applies to very tall trees as well as those within your reach as well. Imagine beginning pruning a tall tree from the bottom. You’ll not have studs to get down with. Also, it enhances neat pruning.
Big cuts first
What are the big cuts? These are mainly parts of the tree considered distractive to the established branches. They include vertical long stems sticking too high above the established branches. Rubbing branches within the tree which are considered injurious to the stems. Vertical shoots within the tree, mostly growing at unestablished joints.
Part of the big cuts is the dry, damaged, and broken branches. Use a pole and a saw to prevent tearing within the tree.
Take care of fat branches
Fat branches precipitate the highest amount of risk while doing pruning. Tearing can be witnessed if less care is input on these branches. To prevent this, it is recommended that you start about 6 inches away from the branch joint.
Saw ½ way through the branch from the top, opposite to the side you want the branch to fall. Saw again about 3 inches from the first cut at the bottom side of the branch ½ way. Again saw the top side about 2inches from the first cut. Tearing will not be experienced in this case.
Make a close cut to the branch collar
You may find some part of the branch, outside the branch collar where a wrinkled bark can be seen. A cut should be made at this position. As always, some hormones will be released to bring about a self-healing process to the branch section.
Removal of branch sprouts
Uncontrolled shoots that develop within branch stems. They crowd and cause a shade which inhibits the tree development. You’re advised to remove them while they’re still young.
